April is fast approaching . World Autism Awareness Day is the 2nd of April and Strive is inviting schools to do something to celebrate this special day and to recognise April as Autism Awareness Month. There are many, many ways that you might choose to participate. You could dress up in blue to show your support, make something, learn more about Autism and how to support people on the Autism Spectrum or raise funds for an Autism charity.
The list below has just a few ideas to help kick off your plans. Whatever you decide to do we’d love to hear about it and if you want to send some photos of your creations or activities then we can share them with the wider community too.
Ideas to Celebrate Autism Awareness Month
- Download Loretto’s Powerpoint Presentation about Autism Awareness.
- Wear something blue. Dress up and have fun! Or do something else with a blue theme. Blue is the recognised colour for World Autism Awareness Day.
- Watch a video – this is a great one – Amazing Things Happen.
- Read a book about Autism. There are many great titles available for different ages.
- Spread Kindness! Encourage students to write messages of support for each other or do something nice for others. It’s great for building inclusion.
- Try some sensory friendly activities for example play quiet music and dim the lights in the library or some other suitable space during break times.
- Set up a sensory friendly space for use by students.
- Do a puzzle piece craft or writing activity using a template like this Puzzle Piece and make a display of the individualised puzzle pieces – a great way to highlight the beauty created when we all get to be who we are – everyone is different but just as every piece is important for the display, every person is important in our lives and we all contribute to the whole community.
- Do a jigsaw puzzle or other similar activity together as a group to build cooperation and encourage all to join in.
If you have any questions or would like to let us know about your celebration, please contact us.
Whatever you do we hope you enjoy it and celebrate Autism Awareness Month!
